      the structure of the encyclopedia

Return to Contributors

The UEE is built around ten general categories, which were established at the first full meeting of the Academic Editorial Committee in Los Angeles in March 2006. The categories serve as the main pillars or backbone of the encyclopedia to organize its structure and to help editors and authors to circumscribe the scope of a particular article in relation to other articles. The structure is intended to enhance coherence and to minimize undue overlap, redundancy, and gaps among the articles of the encyclopedia. It is not a means for dictating a hierarchy of decreasing importance or relevance with respect to ancient materials, scholarly disciplines, or approaches. Articles will include links to other relevant articles, enabling the user to navigate freely through the encyclopedia and across categories. Authors are encouraged to suggest such links; the editorial team will also propose them.

The ten categories will also serve as entry points for the encyclopedia's articles on the UEE website (UEE Full Version). The UEE homepage will feature ten buttons, one for each category, on which the user can click to be referred to a list of overarching essays about that domain of the encyclopedia, from which it will be possible to proceed through links to more detailed articles. This mode of entry will offer an alternative to full-text searches.

The main categories are named as follows:
