Bang! A typesetter's slang term for exclamation point, the sound of a starting pistol signaling that the contenders are off and running, and the satisfying noise a typewriter key makes when struck with determination and fervor. Though most of the writers in this collection of short fiction from UCLA’s Creative Writing classes are too young to know the sound of a Smith-Corona, they have learned the sound of a well-turned phrase and the craft of the short story. Mentor Greg Sarris, author of the book Grand Avenue and HBO mini-series of the same name, drew this group together and struck a spark. The students’ own initiative and enthusiasm fanned the flame of dedication and hard work that brought seventeen stories to press for the first time. |

James Lee Burke, author of Cimarron Rose, comments with appreciation on "prose that is both specific and at the same time implies inner meaning. The momentum carries us along, resulting in an accelerating ride." |

From Greg Sarris's Foreword: "If you have wondered about the future of fiction, of what's to come, then read on. You will find cause for hope." |
