The Citizen-Patient in Historical and International Perspective
Course Description: Seminar, three hours. Graduate courses involving reading, lecturing, and discussion of selected topics. Does not fulfill seminar requirements for Ph.D. degree. May be repeated for credit. When concurrently scheduled with course 191, undergraduates must obtain consent of instructor to enroll.
Course Description:
Individual illness has involved not only specialized health-care providers, but social or
religious philanthropy, and municipal, national, and international agencies. Diseases,
especially if communicable or epidemic, present special histories.
In this seminar, participants will bring their individual projects (sources in
Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese are especially welcome). The shared
projects will create a special focus such as individual, national or municipal health care,
the “disabled” as a special group, or a specific disease, therapy or country. The
instructor’s Citizen-Patient in Revolutionary and Imperial Paris (1993) will serve as a
launching pad. Units 4.0
