WHO IS WHO in Foreign Languages Masako O. Douglas Masako O. Douglas is a Lecturer of Japanese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. She has a PhD (1992) from the University of Southern California. her research interests include curriculum development for foreign/heritage students (especially the development of literacy and bi-literacy), instructional methodologies, assessment of language proficiency, teacher training, program evaluation, and the use of technology in teaching Japanese. She has developed models of content-based teaching in Japanese, and has implemented an intermediate-level curriculum for heritage students, and a model of language across the curriculum in a non-language content course. She is currently working on the development of a web-based Japanese placement test. Dr. Douglas is the author of the book A Practical Guide to Learning Kanji for Learners from an Alphabetic Background (1998). E-mail: masakoucla@earthlink.net Shoichi Iwasaki Shoichi Iwasaki is an Associate Professor of Japanese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. He is also the Director of South and Southeast Asian Languages and Cultures. He has a PhD in Linguistics (1988) from UCLA and an MA (1979) in East Asian Languages from the University of Hawaii. Professor Iwasaki received his earlier education in Japan and has also studied extensively in Thailand. He is the author of many papers on the linguistics of Thai and Japanese and is a reviewer for several scholarly publications including Studies in Language and The Journal of Japanese Discourse.
