Financial Aid & Fellowsips

For a detailed description of Graduate Support in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, please refer to NELC Fellowships and Financial Aid.

A select overview of relevant fellowships for students of Iranian, is provided below:

Departmental Grants

Grants provided by NELC for incoming and continuing graduate support, the exact sum of which depends upon the number and quality of enrolled graduate students. The Departmental Grants, may cover various graduate students’ fees and offer stipends for living expenses.

Chancellor’s Fellowship

NELC may nominate one incoming graduate student for this fellowship, whose tuition (if applicable) and registration fees, as well as a stipend above tuitions and fees in the varying amount of ($15,000-$18,000 per annum) to cover living expenses, will be assumed by the Chancellor’s Office for the first and fifth years respectively, while presuming that for the second and third years the student would support herself/himself through Teaching Assistantships/Fellowships (henceforth TA/F; more on TA/F below), and in the fourth year, by dint of a Dissertation Fellowship.

Dean’s Fellowship

Same as Chancellor’s Fellowship, but provided by the Dean’s Office.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (TITLE VI)

The Foreign Language and Area Studies Program (FLAS) offers a stipend of $15,000 to graduate students undergoing advanced training in modern foreign languages and related area studies. The Registration Fees, in the amount of $8,100 for Residents, or of $8,400 for non-Residents (plus $15,000 non-Resident tuition fees), for the year 2006/7 are also endured by the grant. Currently approved languages for the Middle East are: Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish.

Teaching Assistantship/Fellowship

The TA/F assumes the Registration Fees for both Resident and non-Resident Graduate Students, as well as a honorarium of $5,000-$5,500 per teaching quarters for those bestowed with a TA/F. The non-Resident tuition fees, however, are not covered by the TA/F, and have to be assumed by the department, or the graduate student her-/himself.

Extra-Mural Funds/Supports

Addition support may be sought inside the department, through established fellowships geared towards specific disciplines, or from other comparable, widely advertised, extra-mural fellowships.
