Ten Proverbs in Five Yobe Languages

In 2004, the Yobe Languages Research Project published collections of "verbal arts" in five Yobe State languages (counting the Yaya and Gudi dialects of Ngamo as different languages). Each of these collections include a substantial number of proverbs, many of which were shared by several languages. I found ten proverbs that were shared by all five languages and videotaped speakers reciting them. Click here to open a pdf file of the ten proverbs with morpheme-by-morpheme glosses and free translations for each language.

Below is a screen shot of a movie that comprises the videos for each language plus the text. The video, which is a QuickTime movie, is 24.3 MB, making it impractical to post it on this website. It is available on CD. For information, contact Russell Schuh at schuh@humnet.ucla.edu.
