Doug Maynard: "Complaints and I-Mean Prefaced Utterances"

I've been exploring the use of I-mean prefaced utterances in relation to complaint-type sequences in conversation. I-mean prefaced utterances tend to cluster around complaints or other kinds of dispreferred/inapposite social actions. In this workshop, we will examine a small collection of extracts that seem to share similar sequential properties. I may bring several such small collections and let the workshop members choose which collection to work on.

Suzanne Wertheim: "Style shifting and public performance"

In this workshop we will delve into the nuanced and delightfully complex phenomenon of style shifting. I will provide videotaped data of two recent performances by a public persona speaking on the same topic in two distinct locations, where both audiences presumably share a political orientation and affiliation but diverge socio-demographically in addition to geographically; these two performances differ in a variety of interesting ways. We will use these two speeches to examine theoretical issues of audience design, referee design, speaker design, and heteroglossia, as well as relating the various indexicals found in these performances with stance, alignment, and identity construction. Through this exploration of intertextuality, oratory, and artful performance, we will attempt to gain some insight into the salience of, meaning of, and motivation for stylistic choices and the exploitation of particular semiotic resources, both linguistic and paralinguistic.
Workshop participants are more than welcome to supplement these videos with their own data involving style shifting and performance, which may include video, audio, or transcripts, and may be either performances meant for large audiences or for a small participant framework. Multilingual and code-switched data are particularly welcome; any foreign-language data should be transliterated (if necessary) and closely translated.
Interested parties may want to view these videos in advance and compile a list of salient style shifts and indexicals; I will gladly provide links to the videos upon request. A short list of suggested readings will also be sent to all registered participants.
