Timothy Tangherlini

Timothy Tangherlini is a folklorist whose recent work in Korea has focused on aspects of popular and consumer culture. He has done research on Korean shamanism, Korean mythology and Korean folk tale traditions. He has co-edited "Sitings: Critical Approaches to Geography in Korea" (Univ. Hawaii Press, 2008) along with Sallie Yea, and "Nationalism and the Construction of Korean Identity" (Korea Research Monograph 1999) along with Hyung-il Pai. He co-produced the documentary film, "Our Nation: A Korean Punk Rock Community" with Stephen Epstein. He also cotranslated Yi Chong-jun's novel, "Your Paradise" with Jennifer M. Lee. He teaches courses on Korean Folklore, and Korean Folk and Popular Religions. He has held visiting appointments at the University of Iceland, Harvard University, the University of Copenhagen and UC Berkeley. His research has been supported by grants from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the Fulbright Foundation, the Henry Luce Foundation and the Daesan Foundation.
