The Realpolitik of Applying to Grad School

Are you thinking about applying to our department's graduate program? Admission is very competitive.

Our grads offer some (unofficial) advice:

  • Develop good writing skills.

  • Get to know your professors. This is key to getting positive letters of recommendation.

  • Grads need to possess reading knowledge of certain languages, usually both German and French, and, depending on your chosen field, Spanish and Italian. It is best to learn such European languages while you are still an undergraduate. Students working in non-western areas (for example, Japanese, Chinese, Pre-Columbian, Islamic, Indian, etc.) can study an appropriate language at the graduate level. UCLA is unique in that it offers courses in such languages as Sanskrit, Arabic, Nahuatl, etc.

  • You need to decide what area you want to study before you apply. If possible, take as many upper-level courses as you can related to your field. In addition to art history courses work in such disciplines as History, Anthropology, Classics, Archaeology, and Literary Studies will prove useful. Once you've identified an area that interests you, contact the relevant faculty member.
