Saloni Mathur, who received her PhD. in Cultural Anthropology from the New School for Social Research in 1998, brings both art historical and anthropological perspectives to her teaching and research. Her areas of interest include the visual cultures of modern South Asia and the South Asian diaspora, colonial studies and postcolonial criticism, the relationship between modern ethnography and the artistic avant-garde, museum studies, and feminist criticism. She has published in such interdisciplinary sites as Cultural Anthropology, American Anthropologist, Third Text, Parachute, Art Bulletin, and The Art Journal, and has recently completed a book titled India by Design: Colonial History and Cultural Display with the University of California Press in 2007. Professor Mathur previously taught at Vassar College and the University of Michigan, before joining UCLA's faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2001.
