McCallum received his Ph.D. in Asian Art History from the Institute
of Fine Arts, New York University in 1973. His principal specialty
is Japanese Buddhist art of all periods, particularly sculpture,
and he is also concerned with pan-Asiatic relations in Buddhism
and Buddhist art. In addition, he is interested in modern Japanese
art, especially painting during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods.
Important publications include Zenkoji and Its Icon: A Study
in Medieval Religious Art and many articles and reviews in
scholarly journals. His current research focuses on Japanese Buddhism
and Buddhist art of the Asuka and Hakuho periods. He serves on
the editorial boards of several journals, including Artibus
Asiae, Archives of Asian Art, and Journal of Japanese
Studies. |
