UCLA Department of Art History
(The Slide Library)

200 Dodd Hall
Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.
(310) 825-3725

The Slide Library functions to serve the teaching and research needs of the Art History faculty and graduate students and to aid, whenever possible, faculty from other departments at UCLA. It is staffed by two full-time employees assisted by several undergraduate and graduate student employees. David Ziegler (825-0216) is the Curator and is responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, classification, cataloging and circulation of the collection. Susan Rosenfeld (825-3725) is the Assistant Curator and can help you with many of the same things.

The collection consists of approximately 320,000 slides. At its current size, the slide collection maintains a good general selection for teaching major areas of European, American, Asian, African, Oceanic, Native North American and Pre-Columbian Art. New faculty and graduate students often create a need for new slides in their field of specialty. To meet this need, we produce 50-80% of our own slides from books or original materials and the remaining percentage we either purchase from commercial sources or duplicate slides from faculty or graduate student originals.

With the advent of digital technologies, the Visual Resource Collection has expanded its responsibilities to include providing digital imaging and related services to the department. If you would like to learn more about student and faculty opportunities in this regard, please contact David Ziegler (Ziegler@humnet.ucla.edu) or Susan Rosenfeld (srxvrc@humnet.ucla.edu).
