Historians, literary scholars, art historians, and curators interested in furniture and furnishings of France, England, and their colonies during the long eighteenth century will gather at this two-and-a-half-day conference to critique old approaches and develop new interpretations while exploring the way that material culture—in this case furnishing—shaped cultural production and mirrored social patterns.

Locations and scheduling:

The Getty Museum is at 1200 Getty Center Drive, off the San Diego Freeway (405), Getty Center Drive exit.

The Clark Library is at 2520 Cimarron Street, in the West Adams district, one block east of Arlington Avenue, two blocks south of the Santa Monica Freeway.

Session at the Getty Museum, Thursday, January 31, 2002: Parking will be reserved for registrants beginning at 1:30 p.m. Registrants are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the Museum’s exhibitions, gardens, and vistas during daylight. Those planning to attend only the conference must arrive no later than 4:30 p.m. for transportation to the conference area.

Nametags will be mailed to registrants in advance and will be used as a form of identification. They should be worn or kept on hand while on site, especially after 6:00 p.m., when the Museum is closed to the general public.

            Space at the Clark is limited and registration closes when capacity is reached.

Note: Those planning to attend the session at the Getty must observe the stated deadline in order to be on the Museum’s guest list and to receive nametags in time (required because of current security concerns). For a detailed explanation, see “Session at the Getty Museum,” on adjacent panel.

Registration Fees:            UC Faculty & staff: $15; students: free of charge; others: $25

The session at the Getty is hosted by the J. Paul Getty Museum. Fees cover lunches and refreshments at the Clark, advance mailing of nametags, and advance copies of abstracts.
