Remembering Oscar Wilde
One hundred years ago Oscar Wilde-eminent critic, novelist, poet, and playwright-died in penury at the Hôtel d'Alsace in the Quartier Latin of Paris, some three and half years after his release from two years in solitary confinement with hard labor at Reading Gaol. During this final phase of his life, he traveled much of the time through Europe incognito. "It is my name that terrifies," he informed his publisher. But try as he might to suppress his identity, Wilde's renown-if not notoriety-survived him to such a degree that the twentieth century would often look back in awe and with compassion at his unforgettable career. This symposium provides the occasion to consider how modern scholarship has used the remarkable archives of the Clark Library in order to remember Oscar Wilde. Papers explore not only how scholars have chosen to memorialize this great writer but also how the man himself transformed his memorable image during the Victorian fin de siècle.
