Since its founding in 1980, the Armadillo
String Quartet has established itself as one of Los Angeless premier and
more versatile chamber music groups. The Armadillos have appeared in established
Southern California chamber music series and festivals such as the Monday
Evening Concerts, South Bay Chamber Music Society, Chamber Music in Historic
Sites, Sundays at Four, Pacific Composers Forum, and Santa Barbara Fall Music
Festival. They also dedicate themselves to expanding the boundaries that define
chamber music: local museum and gallery aficionados, visitors to Frank Lloyd
Wrights Hollyhock House, and even whitewater rafters along the Colorado and
other Western wild rivers have all enjoyed their performances. Haydn fans
have been presented a nearly thirty-five-hour marathon concert of the complete
string quartets. Since 1991, the composer Peter Schickele has joined the quartet,
as performer and commentator, for annual concerts of his works. In December
1999, the Armadillos appeared at Carnegie Hall, performing the world premiere
of a P. D. Q. Bach quartet.
