Fine Printing and Graphic Arts

Clark's interest in printing is represented by complete runs of the books printed by the Kelmscott and Doves presses, the two greatest influences on the revival of printing in England at the turn of the century. The library has continued to collect in this field, with an emphasis on American fine presses in the Arts and Crafts tradition, and particularly on California printers. Many of the collections include archival material. Of particular note is the Eric Gill archive of diaries, correspondence, original artwork, and business papers, supported by a comprehensive collection of the printed books which Gill wrote, designed, or illustrated. Robert Gibbings is also well represented. Recently acquired archives include those of Southern California printers Ward Ritchie, Saul and Lillian Marks (Plantin Press), Patrick Reagh, and Vance Gerry (Weather Bird Press), and the Los Angeles artist Paul Landacre. The Ward Ritchie gift includes numerous publications of the French art deco book designer and woodcut artist François-Louis Schmied.
