| Longus. Longou poimenikon ton kata Daphnin
kai Chloen bibloi tettares. Parma: Bodoni, 1786.
The great neoclassical printer Giambattista Bodoni produced only 176 copies of this beautiful edition of the Greek text of Daphnis and Chloe, and in so doing he helped to established a market for de luxe editions of the text. He also printed the book in Caro's Italian translation slightly later, in an edition of only 56 copies, all meant for specific recipients who are listed on a leaf of paper usually found in the book. (Purchase, 1945). |

| Longus. Daphnis et Chloe. Translated by
Jacques Amyot. Preface by Alexandre Dumas. London: Glady, 1878
This possibly wins the prize for the oddest edition of Longus ever to
appear. It was printed at the Chiswick Press by Charles Whittingham for
the publisher, printed in blue and red throughout, and with no punctuation.
The edition of 333 copies was divided into no less than seven issues.
This copy is one of the 15 (but not numbered) on "Japon." (Purchase,
1951). |
