Daphnis & Chloe

Some 20th-Century Editions

Longus. Les amours pastorals de Daphnis et Chloe. Tranlated by Jacques Amyot. Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1933.

The wood engraving below for the last book printed by St.-John Hornby at his press (apart from a bibliography) is by Gwen Raverat. The initial letters are by Graily Hewitt. The press run was 310 copies. (Purchase, 2000).

Longus. Daphnis and Chloe. Translated by George Thornley. London: Geoffrey Bles, 1925.

John Austen illustrated this characteristic '20s edition of Longus. The edition was relatively large, but this copy is one of 100 on large paper, signed by the illustrator. Exhibited are two of the original watercolors, of which the Clark owns four in all. (Book purchased 1944; the watercolors purchased 1994).

Longus. The pastoral loves of Daphnis and Chloe. Translated by George Moore. London: William Heinemann, 1924.

The illustrations are taken from the French edition of 1718, and were reproduced in photogravure by Emery Walker. The edition was limited to 1,280 numbered and signed copies. (Purchase, 1925).

Longus. Daphnis et Chloe. London: A. Zwemmer, 1937.

Aristide Maillol executed the woodcuts for this edition, which was printed in Paris by Philippe Gonin in an edition of 250 copies. The Clark Library also owns a set of separately issued woodcuts for this edition. (Purchase, 1951).

Longus. The Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe. Translated by George Moore. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1934.

The etchings for this edition were executed by Ruth Reeves, and the book was printed by Porter Garnett at The Laboratory Press in Pittsburgh. The edition was limited to 1,500 copies, signed by the illustrator. (Purchase, 1948).

Longus. Les amours pastorals de Daphnis et Chloe. London: 1779.

Despite its stated place of publication, this edition was doubtless printed in Paris.

(Purchase, 1952).

Powell, Lawrence. The Enchanted Couple. Glendale: The Battledore Press, 1979.

Powell was the Director of the Clark Library from the mid-1940s until the early 1960s. One of his personal collecting interests was Daphnis and Chloe, and his collection eventually was given to Occidental College, where he had been an undergraduate. In 1977 he was presented with the Thomas More medal by the Gleeson Associates of the University of San Francisco, and this address was given at that time. Andy and Mary Horn of The Battledore Press printed it in an edition of 100 copies some two years later. (Gift of Mary Horn, 1985).

Longus. Daphnis and Chloe. Translated by A.M. Burnett. Etchings by Susan Allix. London: Willow Press, 1982.

The English book artist Susan Allix not only printed the beautiful edition below; she also did the engravings and executed the bespoke binding, which was done for Joshua and Phyllis Heller. The translation was made expressly for this edition by Allix's husband, A.M. Burnett. The edition consisted of only 55 copies. (Purchase, 2000).
