Disguised as a Turk, Grelot traveled over the greater part of theTurkish Empire. He even pretended that he had been in Paris in the sutie of Mustapha-Aga. Knowing Turkish, he wandered around Constantinople as he pleased, mingled with the inhabitants, and made sketches. He did not gain admission to the Seraglio, saying that it would cost more than “the Empire of the Grand Signior.” Judicious bribery got him in to St. Sophia, which he sketched with the skill and precision found in his other images. Grelot’s book was essential reading for travelers to the Turkish Empire.
