Shane Butler is the author of a monograph on Cicero and the written word (The Hand of Cicero, 2002) and the ongoing editor of the Latin Letters of Renaissance humanist Angelo Poliziano (vol. 1, 2006) for the I Tatti Renaissance Library, a series for which he is now Associate Editor. He is finishing a book on the history of the page as both material and metaphor in ancient and medieval literature. He also is working on the extra-visual senses in the classical tradition, including the influence of perfumery on poetry, and is organizing, with Alex Purves and Mario Telò, a conference for spring 2010, "Synesthesia: Classics and the Classical Tradition Beyond the Visual Paradigm."

Prof. Butler received his Ph.D. in Classics from Columbia University (2000), is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome (FAAR '98'99), and is a former Fellow of Villa I Tatti, the Harvard Center for Renaissance Studies in Florence.
