Graduate Programs

The UCLA Department of Classics offers programs leading to the M.A. & Ph.D. in Classics. Our program was ranked in the top 10 nation-wide for graduate program effectiveness in the last report by the National Research Council.

At UCLA, Classical Studies are conceived in the broadest terms. Areas of faculty strength include cultural and gender studies, literary criticism and theory, linguistics, papyrology, archaeology and ancient philosophy. At the doctoral level, students may elect to specialize in one of these areas or may explore interdisciplinary approaches to classical antiquity. Mastery of and proficiency in the ancient languages is emphasized.
