REQUIREMENTS FOR MAJORS AND MINORS


MAJOR

Classical Civilization
Preparation for major: Classics 10 and 20 and one from among Classics 30, 40W, 41W, 42, 51A/B, 87GE, or 88GE.
Major requirements: Greek 3 or Latin 3, or Greek 16 or Latin 16; two courses in Ancient Greek and/or Roman History (History 112A-E, 113A-B, 114A-C, 115, 116A); two courses in classical art or archaeology (Classics C151E, 152A-B, M153A-K, and 153M); Classics 191; seven additional upper division courses in Classical Civilization (drawn from Classics M121-185, with up to three substitutions from Greek 100-133 and/or Latin 100-133 allowed; Classics 198A and 198B also count, but as only one course). Courses in related fields not offered by the department may be substituted by petition and approval of the Undergraduate Advisor.

Latin
Preparation for major: Latin 1, 2, 3 and 20, or Latin 16 and 20, or equivalent; Classics 10 and 20.
Major requirements: Seven upper division courses in Latin, including Latin 110; Classics 191; three upper division courses in Classical Civilization (Classics M121-185) and/or Ancient Greek and/or Roman History (History 112A-E, 113A-B, 114A-C, 115, 116A). Courses in related fields not offered by the department may be substituted by petition and approval of the Undergraduate Advisor.

Greek
Preparation for major: Greek 1, 2, 3 and 20, or Greek 16 and 20, or equivalent; Classics 10 and 20.
Major requirements: Seven upper division courses in Greek, including Greek 110; Classics 191; three upper division courses in Classical Civilization (Classics M121-185) and/or Ancient Greek and/or Roman History (History 112A-E, 113A-B, 114A-C, 115, 116A). Courses in related fields not offered by the department may be substituted by petition and with the approval of the Undergraduate Advisor.

Greek & Latin
Preparation for major: Greek 1, 2, 3 and 20, or Greek 16 and 20, or equivalent; Latin 1, 2, and 3, or Latin 16 and 20, or equivalent; and Classics 10 and 20.
Major requirements: Four upper division courses in Greek and four upper division courses in Latin, including either Greek 110 or Latin 110; Classics 191; three upper division courses in Classical Civilization (Classics M121-185) and/or Ancient Greek and/or Roman History (History 112A-E, 113A-B, 114A-C, 115, 116A). Courses in related fields not offered by the department may be substituted by petition and with the approval of the Undergraduate Advisor.

MINORS

Classical Civilization
Required lower division courses: Classics 10 and 20 and one from among Classics 30, 40W, 41W, 42, 51A/B, 87GE, and 88GE.
Required upper division courses: Five upper division courses in Classical Civilization (drawn from Classics M121-185 and 191). One upper division course in a related field (such as Ancient Greek or Roman history) may be substituted by petition and approval of the Undergraduate Advisor. A minimum of sixteen upper division units in the minor must be in addition to units applied toward a major or minor in another department or program.

Latin
Required lower division courses: Latin 2, 3 and 20, or Latin 16 and 20, or equivalent.
Required upper division courses: Five upper division courses in Latin (Latin 100-133). A minimum of sixteen upper division units in the minor must be in addition to units applied toward a major or minor in another department or program.

Greek
Required lower division courses: Greek 2, 3 and 20, or Greek 16 and 20, or equivalent.
Required upper division courses: Five upper division courses in Greek (Greek 100-133). A minimum of sixteen upper division units in the minor must be in addition to units applied toward a major or minor in another department or program.

HONORS PROGRAM

The Honors Program is open to all departmental majors with a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.5 in departmental courses and an overall G.P.A. of 3.25 or better.
