BORCHARD DISSERTATION RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN FRANCE, 2005-06

Advanced graduate students whose work demonstrates a strong interest in French literature and culture are invited to submit applications for a dissertation fellowship in France. Two fellowships will be available for UCLA students who wish to spend the 2005-2006 academic year pursuing a research project anywhere in France. The fellowship amount is $17,000 for one year.

To qualify for these grants, UCLA students should have advanced to candidacy. All candidates should submit a letter of application accompanied by the following:

  • a description of the research project, of no more than 750 words, to be pursued during the year spent in France
  • current C.V.
  • a transcript of graduate coursework
  • one letter of recommendation
  • evidence of competence in both spoken and written French

No standard application form is required. Applications should be submitted by January 14, 2005 to:

Mark Pokorski
Program Coordinator
Center for Modern and Contemporary Studies
310 Royce Hall, 405 Hilgard Ave
Los Angeles CA 90095-1461

Candidates will receive notification by February 28, 2005. All students accepted must register and pay fees as UCLA students in order to receive the award.

As funds for this Program are limited, students are strongly encouraged to apply for funding to all other sources available to them. In particular, UCLA students in the Division of Humanities should apply wherever possible for a Lenart Graduate Travel Fellowship. All students should indicate in their letter of application whether or not alternate sources of funding are available to them, and/or if they plan to make such applications.

Selected applicants will have advanced to candidacy by June 2005, must conduct their research in France, and must agree to meet a representative of the Borchard Foundation in Paris during their fellowship year.

This fellowship is funded by the Borchard Foundation, and is coordinated by the UCLA Center for Modern and Contemporary Studies.

Inquiries regarding this fellowship can be directed to Mark Pokorski at the Center for Modern & Contemporary Studies, at email mpok@humnet.ucla.edu, or phone (310) 206-0559.
