UCLA Paris Program in Critical Theory

2002-2003 Call for Applications

Advanced graduate students whose work demonstrates a strong interest in critical theory are invited to submit applications to participate in UCLA’s Paris Program in Critical Theory. Under this Program, a limited number of fellowships will be available for UCLA students who wish to spend the 2002-2003 academic year pursuing a research project in Paris. Students at other institutions are invited to apply for affiliation in the Program, but must provide their own financial support.

To qualify for these grants, UCLA students should, as a rule, have completed their course requirements. All candidates should submit a letter of application accompanied by the following:

No standard application form is required. Applications should be submitted by May 1, 2002 to:

Paris Program in Critical Theory
ATTN: Professor Sam Weber
Northwestern University
Department of German
Kresge Hall 152, 1859 Sheridan Rd.
Evanston, IL 60208-2203

Candidates will receive notification by June 3, 2002. Where necessary, acceptance in the Program will be made contingent upon enrollment in an intensive summer language course. All students accepted for affiliation must register and pay fees as UCLA students. It is possible under some circumstances for students to affiliate for less than a full academic year.

As funds for this Program are limited, students are strongly encouraged to apply for funding to all other sources available to them. In particular, UCLA students in the Division of Humanities should apply wherever possible for a Lenart Graduate Travel Fellowship. All students should indicate in their letter of application whether or not alternate sources of funding are available to them, and/or if they plan to make such applications.

The research project will in most cases be related to the student dissertation. It will orient the work to be done in Paris. Prior to the actual start of the 2002 Paris Program, the Program Director will meet with participating students to help them organize their schedules for the coming year. In previous years, the Program has established good working relationships with the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and the College International de Philosophie, as well as with other leading research institutions in Paris.

During the Fall Quarter, the Program Director will lead a weekly research seminar on a question of current concern in contemporary critical theory. The seminar can also serve as a forum for work in progress. The particular topic of the seminar will be determined in consultation with participating students. The Program Director will also endeavor to make the Program a focal point for international exchanges by inviting French and European scholars to participate in informal discussions, both in Paris and, whenever possible, at UCLA.
