Nicole Dufresne

Lecturer, director of travel-study program in Paris. Undergraduate advisor. Co-coordinator of language program. Ph.D in Comparative Literature, University of Southern California, 1977.

My primary interest lies in the ways language and culture combine to generate new forms of communicative interaction in the francophone world.

Specialized Courses

Business French: Language and Communication analyze the workings of the French company, business communication, and the economic and legal context of employment. The Culture of Business in France explores such culture-specific aspects of commercial activity and mentality as marketing, advertising, and the impact of the European Community.

In my translation courses, I focus on communication in contemporary popular culture (film subtitles, tourism, advertising), and in intellectual life (fiction, autobiography, editorial and investigative journalism).

Activities outside the classroom

Consultant on an educative CD-rom "French for the Real World" produced by Cendant Technologies (1998).

Organizer of workshop for creating online portfolios, with classroom applications for advanced courses, co-sponsored by the French Government and the UCLA department of French (March 2000).

Participant in International Conference on "Language, Communication and Global Management, " sponsored by the French Government, hosted by the Thunderbird School, Scottsdale, AZ (April 2000).
