This section introduces the Foreign Language Technology Coordinator (FLITC) and several tools that are especially useful for language instructors.
Foreign Language ITC: Contact the Foreign Language Instructional Technology Coordinator (FLITC), Ted Liu, to discuss instructional technology implementation or project development for foreign languages. He can be reached by email at ted@humnet.ucla.edu.
Center for World Languages: The Center for World Languages (CWL) was created within UCLA's International Institute and brings together the UCLA Language Resource Center (LRC) and the university's Academic English unit. The goals of the center are to bring more coherence to existing language-related activities and to extend UCLA's presence, visibility, and capacity for innovation and instructional delivery. The overriding goal of the Center is to continue the tradition of language innovation and professional development initiated by the LRC and to advocate for language learning and teaching, especially with regard to heritage and less commonly taught languages.
Language Instructional Technology: This website provides information about technology that is particularly useful to the Foreign Language Community at UCLA. You'll find specialized information about fonts and display and an introduction to many tools, including SCOLA and WIMBA (mentioned below), that enhance Foreign Language Learning & Teaching.
Foreign Language Fonts: Find step-by-step instructions on how to display and type in a language other than English on your computer (from the Center for World Languages).
Foreign Language Image Resources: Internet sites than provide digital visual resources for teaching foreign languages.
SCOLA International Braodcasts : This service allows students and instructors to view broadcast television from around the world. Great for language and ethnographic classes. This subscription service is currently available on-campus in the CLICC lab.
Wimba Communication & Assessment Tools : Wimba is a suite of online communications tools as well as an Oral Assessment Builder. Instructors and students can communicate using Voice Email, Voice Discussion Boards, and Voice Direct (a voice chat tool). With the Oral Assessment Builder, instructors can create online oral assessments for students to take, as well as give oral feedback to students.
