Capturing a clip from a VHS, DVD, VCD, or mini-DV tape
Setting up
- Turn on the deck or camcorder to play the video.
- Open iMovie. Choose File > New Project. Give the project a name and click Create.

Capturing video
- Click the mode switch [Fig. 2] to set to Camera Mode. The message “Camera Connected” will appear on the screen.
- Control your camera using the playback controls on the iMovie screen. (NOTE: This function does not work when you are importing the video from a VHS deck via an analog-to-digital converter. Click Play on the screen while you control the VHS deck so that you can view the video on the computer screen.)
- Cue up the tape a few second before the point where you want to start importing.
- Click Play and immediately click Import.
- Click Import again to stop importing. Your captured clip will appear in the Clips Pane [Fig. 3].
If you try to capture a lengthy section of video, iMovie may automatically divide the clip into multiple sections.
If you need to trim the imported clip, go to Editing video. Otherwise, go to Saving video.
