Artist Statement by Scott Raynor
Members of the LGBTQ community who maintain their subjectivity, in spite of discrimination, and exist as exceptions to oppressive hetero-normative standards, act as living proof that such standards are not based on absolute or natural laws but are, rather, culturally constructed codes derivative of a biased and unjust majority consensus. Thus, such oppressive standards, unhinged from their erroneous theoretical ground in natural law by the subjective presence of the LGBTQ community, remain malleable and subject to the force of human will for positive change.
Scott Raynor is an undergraduate art major at UCLA.
