Although active in the 1960s-80s in Chicano and gay political movements, Robert Legorreta / Cyclona (1952- ) has, from the start, challenged in his work the restrictions and exclusions of both Chicano and gay identities. He traces his cross-dressing not to the tradition of drag queens but to the androgyny and glitter of the 60s, and now identifies not as gay but as homosexual. Legorreta first appeared publicly as Cyclona in 1969, in a play written and directed by Gronk (1954- ). Subsequently, Legorreta reports, "we used to do photo sessions. What we were doing was capturing live art and putting it into photographs." This image, from one of those sessions, is from a scrapbook in The Fire of Life: The Robert Legorreta/Cyclona Collection in the UCLAChicano Studies Research Center archive.
