CYCLONA and gronk

Robert Legorreta in The Marriage of María Conchita Teresa and Chingón (1971)

Performer, activist, and self-described "political art piece," Robert Legorreta / Cyclona was active in the Chicano movement in the 60s and 70s and the gay liberation movement and AIDS politics in the 70s and 80s.   Yet his work, from the start, has challenged the restrictions and exclusions of both Chicano and gay identities.   Legorreta first appeared publicly as Cyclona in 1969, in a play written and directed by Gronk.   Two years later Cyclona and Gronk staged The Marriage of María Conchita Teresa and Chingón at Cal State LA.   Many who attended the event were surprised to discover both the bride and groom were men.
