UCLA Phonetics LabRECORDING EQUIPMENT |
- Direct to disk recording: Virtually all recording in the lab is done directly to disk. The soundbooth has a dedicated PC for this purpose (the computer is physically outside the soundbooth, in the recording rack). With this computer there are essentially 3 options: (1) microphone into the soundcard of the computer, generally via the amplifier in the recording rack; (2) USB microphone into computer, by-passing the soundcard; (3) balanced microphone (tabletop or headmounted) into the external XAudio box. This last option requires PCQuirerX as the recording program, but should give the best quality recording. The lab also has laptops that can be borrowed for offsite recordings, with either a USB or a miniplug microphone. Various microphones are kept in the hallway cabinet, sorted by connection type.
- HERE IS A HANDOUT FROM APRIL 2005 ABOUT MICROPHONES AND RECORDING IN THE LAB
- Here is a helpful page of information about recording options from the UCL lab.
- Analog tape: The sound booth has a cassette deck for recording (see Henry to get this connected to a microphone), and there are cassette decks for listening/computer input in the audio lab and perhaps elsewhere. There is one portable cassette player that can be checked out .
- DAT: The sound booth has a DAT deck for recording (see Henry to get this connected to a microphone), and there are DAT decks for listening/computer input in the audio lab and perhaps elsewhere. There is a portable that can be checked out.
- Video: The lab has a good digital video camera and a couple of older cameras. VCR for VHS playback is in the general lab. Since the arrival of the PC with Vista rather than XP, we do not have a ready setup for digitizing from VHS.
