Prof. Ian Maddieson
UCLA Linguistics Dept. |
My research interests include, broadly, phonetic universals and development of a universal framework for the description of the sounds of the world's languages, and an understanding of why some sounds are common and others rare. I am currently undertaking "Phonetic studies of endangered languages" (Title of a large NSF grant to myself and Peter Ladefoged).
Sounds of the World's Languages (1995): with Peter Ladefoged, to appear shortly from Blackwells, Oxford.
Patterns of Sounds (1984). Cambridge University Press, Cambridge. Now out of print: work starting on a second edition.
Adjunct faculty do not "usually" teach, but I do teach graduate research seminars, and courses on phonetics, phonology or historical linguistics from time to time.
Standing Committe for World Congresses of African Linguistics, Founding president
26th Annual Congress of African Linguistics (March 1995, hosted by UCLA), Co-organizer, with Tom Hinnebusch. Currently editing the proceedings.
