HONORS IN LINGUISTICS 1 |
In order to receive Honors credit for Linguistics 1, students must enroll in a one unit Honors Seminar (Linguistics 89). This seminar, led by Prof. Schuh, will meet F1 in Rolfe 3134. In order to enroll, you must come to the seminar and be assigned a Permission To Enroll (PTE) number, which will allow to enroll through URSA.
The first meeting of this seminar will be Friday, April 4.
The main purpose of the Honors Seminar is to prepare students to develop an Honors Project, described immediately below. In most weeks Professor Schuh will bring discussion topics related to the Linguistics 1 class. The Honors Seminar will not, however, substitute for regular discussion sections. Students enrolled in the Honors Seminar should attend their regular discussion sections as well. All matters related to weekly assignments will be dealt with in sections, and Teaching Assistants for the sections will be keeping course records.
Students in the Honors Seminar will construct a web site on a language of their choosing (other than English). The project will allow students to put into practice some of the concepts presented in Linguistics 1. Students may work in groups of up to three to construct the site. They will post their site using the e-campus web site for the Linguistics 89 Honors Section (see the links at the top of this page).
Each site will present at least the following information about the language the student is working on:
More information will be distributed in class, and students will receive training in the class on how to create web documents (see the links at the top of this page).
NOTE: Participation in the seminar and content of the web project will determine only the grade for Linguistics 89. The grade for the Linguistics 1 lecture course will not affect the Honors Seminar grade, and more important, WORK FOR THE SEMINAR WILL NOT AFFECT THE LINGUISTICS 1 LECTURE GRADE. That is, a super honors project will not offset a less-than-super performance in Linguistics 1 coursework and vice-versa.
Students who want Honors credit must take Linguistics 89 for a letter grade. Other students can enroll for a letter grade or P/NP. The basis for grading will be as follows:
