What is
Musicology Temp?
Musicology Temp is a quick
and dirty way for you to store personal computer files at school.
Word documents, media files, html files, images, teaching files,
whatever. It is designed to be allow convenient access to your stuff
from the Macintosh TA computers in the department. It is also a
great way to transfer files from your home computer to school
and vice versa. Anyone who wants one may have a folder on Musicology
Temp.
Note: All folders are totally
public and anyone can see into them, open files, or potentially
do more malicious things. It is highly doubtful we'd ever have
any saboteurs among us, but it needs to be stated that what you
put in your folder is not private or secure.
Why is it
called Musicology "Temp"?
Because the idea is to have
a quick and easy way to access files that you're working on, not
maintain a permanent and official storage facility. If you need
permanent or password-protected storage space speak to the folks
over at the CDH help desk (cdh@hument.ucla.edu)
about setting up something like that.
How do I
get a folder?
Simply open Musicology Temp
and choose "New Folder" from the File menu. The new folder
will be named Untitled Folder at first, but you change that by typing
in that space and replacing it with whatever you'd like ("Joe"
or "Joe's Stuff" or "jOe'S dEn oF mÿsTeRy").
How much
stuff can I keep in my folder?
That depends on your definition
of "Temp" and what you need to keep in your folder. We
don't dole out specific amounts of space, so you could hog the whole
thing if you were so inclined or didn't realize how much stuff you
had. Files (large and small) for classes you're TA-ing or teaching
can certainly be kept there for as long as you'll need them. However,
don't download the entire oeuvre of The Rolling Stones and
keep it there for months. Bottomline: use common sense. If you need
to store a huge media file for a while, no worries. If you have
100 Word documents in your folder but they only take up 3 MB of
space, no worries. If you have ten 80 MB .aiff files from your last
CD-burning session two months ago, BAD!
Remember: The entire Musicology
Temp folder can hold almost 12 GB of stuff. That's a lot of space,
but we all must still play nice.
NOTE: It is generally considered
bad form to keep your raw audio files in Musicology Temp even
after you've burned them to CD.
Can I access
Musicology Temp from home (or from Austria)?
Yes, if you have a Macintosh
computer. Remember that "quick and dirty" idea? That's
part of the reason it's Mac-only for now. There are ways to let
Windows computers access Musicology Temp, but they involve more
money and time than any demand has currently been able to justify.
