of ancient Near East -- Egypt, Israel, and Mesopotamia -- with attention
to emergence of writing, monotheism, and urban societies. Letter grading.
50B. Origins of Judaism, Christianity,

Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Survey of formative period for
monotheism -- first millennium of Common Era in the Middle East -- and
emergence of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Letter grading.
50C. Modern Middle Eastern Cultures. (5)
Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Survey of modern Middle
Eastern cultures through readings and films from Arab countries, Iran,
Turkey, and Israel. Letter grading.
