Ph.D. research at the Centre of Non-Western Studies at Leiden University (the Netherlands) (1989 - 1993). Subject: the social context of Ancient Egyptian basketry. PhD exam on 25 November 1999.

M.A. study in History of Religions at the University of Amsterdam (1981 - 1988).

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
2004 - present Associate Professor in Egyptian Archaeology at the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Culturs of the University of California, Los Angeles. Member of the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology.

2001 - present Co-director of the UCLA-RUG Fayum project.

2000 - present Assistant Professor in Egyptian Archaeology at the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures of the University of California, Los Angeles. Member of the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology.

2000 - 2003 Post-doctoral fellowship Department of Archaeology at Leiden University, the Netherlands.

1998 - 1999 Director of the Baynun Mapping Project (Yemen) 1999 Team leader of an expert research project on the feasibility of the development of eco-tourism in the Fayoum (Egypt).

1996 - 2002 Project leader of the Eastern Desert Antiquities Protection Project (EDAPP), a project financed by the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Cairo for the preservation of the cultural heritage in the Eastern Desert of Egypt.

1995 - 1999 Assistant professor of archaeology at Leiden University, working at the Netherlands Institute for Archaeology and Arabic Studies in Cairo (Egypt).

1994 - 2002 Co-director of the excavations at Berenike (Egyptian Red-Sea coast).
