Notes on the Flower Held by the Royal Person
At first it was thought (Carter 1995) that the staff might have had
streamers, something unknown in Assyrian art. The alternatives of mace
head and dagger were considered and rejected since such objects would have
had a straight shaft. The shape of the flower itself is difficult to discern
with accuracy, but the stem seems clear enough and is paralleled both in
the court art of Tiglath Pileser and on pieces from Zincirli.
