The equivalent of a major in Slavic or Russian language and literature is normally required for admission to the department's graduate program and is used to determine the number of courses in Russian literature and/or linguistics that students majoring in Russian studies are expected to make up in order to receive graduate degrees in the department. Students not majoring in Slavic or Russian language and literature who intend to pursue graduate study in the department are strongly encouraged to take courses in Russian literature and linguistics during their undergraduate years to reduce the number of makeup courses required. Qualified seniors may also take graduate courses numbered below 220 with consent of the instructor and the graduate and undergraduate advisers.
