Outreach ProgramsWe consider outreach an important part of our mission at the university. An important aspect of our commitment is the retraining of local community college and high school teachers to introduce them to new research and pedagogy in Composition. In order to accomplish this goal, we have offered a seminar in Composition theory yearly, for the last four years. Faculty from two community colleges and local high schools have met weekly to study and practice new strategies for improving classroom instruction. Currently, we are engaged in another program, funded by a FIPSE grant. The goal of this program is to increase the transfer rate to UCLA, particularly of underrepresented students. Several of our faculty are working with English faculty at three local community colleges to help them restructure their course requirements and their courses so as to encourage students to complete requirements and transfer to a four year institution. This on-going program, with the seminar as an added component, will make communication better between community colleges and UCLA and promote common goals. |
