The focus of
the program is writing. TIP writing courses introduce students to
the kinds of rigorous critical reading and writing they will encounter
in most of their other upper-division courses, and they do so in
the kind of atmosphere most congenial to learning. TIP writing classes
are small (limited to 20 students) highly personalized writing workshops.
They are taught by experienced Writing Programs' faculty who are
committed to working with UCLA's growing transfer population, and
who understand the needs of transfer students as well as the expectations
placed upon them at the university. The number of courses TIP offers
varies from quarter to quarter.
Other
Features of TIP
In
addition to the writing courses TIP students enjoy special access
to counseling and tutoring services.
- Counseling
TIP
students enjoy the benefit of special access to academic counseling
from the College of Letters and Science. An experienced L&S
counselor works directly with TIP classes to make sure students
are informed of important issues arising during the quarter. Students
will also receive timely and important information regarding course
selection, university requirements, and other resources available
to make the transition to UCLA as smooth as possible.
- Tutoring
As
many students have discovered, working with an experienced tutor
is an excellent way to acquire in-depth, immediate, and specific
feedback on any aspect of writing. TIP students can take
advantage of the very close relationship TIP has with Covel Tutorials,
the main tutoring service on campus. Specially selected and trained
tutors, all of whom have a background in writing, are designated
to work with each TIP class throughout the quarter. AAP students
can draw upon the resources of both Covel Tutorials as well as
the excellent tutoring services offered by the AAP program.
- The
Intangibles of TIP
Although
TIP is designed as an academic program providing intensive,
cross-disciplinary instruction in writing which will be beneficial
to students in all of their courses, one of its greatest benefits
comes from the sense of community it provides. For many students,
the sudden shift from a two-year college to a major university
can be disorienting. Transfer students often experience feelings
of anonymity and a sense that the university is impersonal and
indifferent to their needs. As verified time and again in student
evaluation comments, TIP's all-transfer classes offer a sense
of collegiality and community which can be crucial in helping
to navigate this new environment. TIP is most proud of this sense
of grounding it seems to provide students.
When do
TIP classes meet? We
have tried to arrange the schedule to cover all the major class
times, Monday through Thursday, with no overlap. Classes meet for
one hour and fifty minutes twice a week. Whatever your schedule,
there's a TIP course that will fit right into it.
How do
I sign up for TIP? TIP
courses usually enroll very quickly, so if you think TIP offers
the kind of introduction to UCLA you are looking for, you should
act soon.
