University of California Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) & English 3 Proficiency

Because proficiency in English composition is so important to successful performance in many courses, the Entry-Level Writing Requirement is the only requirement for graduation that students must satisfy before entering UCLA or during their first year in residence. Before enrolling at UCLA, students may satisfy this requirement by:

  1. scoring 680 or better on the Writing Section of the new SAT exam first administered in March 2005 OR
  2. scoring 680 or better on the SAT II Subject Test in Writing administered between May 1998 and March 2005 OR
  3. scoring 30 or higher on the combined English/Writing Section of the American College Testing (ACT) Assessment OR
  4. scoring 3, 4, or 5 on one of the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations in English OR
  5. scoring a 5 or above on the International Baccalaureate's Higher Level English A Examination OR
  6. presenting transfer credit for an acceptable college-level course in English composition (passed with a grade of C or better) at another institution OR
  7. passing the University of California Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE).

All freshmen from California high schools should have taken the University of California Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE) during the month of May before they enrolled; others, including freshmen from non-California high schools, may take the AWPE at UCLA early in their first term.

Academic Senate regulations require students who have not satisfied the Entry-Level Writing Requirement in one of the ways described above to take a campus writing course (or courses) to satisfy the requirement as early as possible during their first year in residence. Course placement (in English Composition A, English Composition 2 or English Composition 2i, or in ESL 33c or ESL 35) is determined by performance on the AWPE. Each course must be taken for a letter grade and passed with a grade of C or better. Students receiving a final grade of C- or less must repeat that course during their next term in residence.

Satisfaction of the Entry-Level Writing Requirement is a requisite to English Composition 3 and all subsequent English courses.

English 3 Proficiency Exam

Students may exempt out of English Composition 3 via the English 3 Proficiency Exam. To be eligible for the English 3 Proficiency Exam, students must score 720 or higher on the Writing section of the new SAT or on the SAT II Subject Test in Writing. Outstanding performance on the English 3 Proficiency Exam satisfies the Writing I requirement but does not grant units. Please see Exam Schedule for the next available English 3 Proficiency Exam.
