Besides editing images, instructors may need to set up a system for organizing, annotating and archiving image files. There are a variety of software tools that help with organizing and annotating images, and some tools provide editing capabilities as well. This page provides a brief introducation and overview of some of these tools.

 

Metadata Terminology. In order to understand the current practices and options concerning image metadata and annotation, you will need to familiarize yourself with some of the standard terms.

 

Image Management Software for PCs. This page provides a review of image management software for PC computers.

 

Image Management Software for Mac. This page provides a review of image management software for Apple computers.

 

Image Management on the Web. Currently, the two most widely-used photo-publishing web tools are Flickr and Photobucket, which both have free basic accounts or more advanced accounts at various subscription rates.

 

Web Image Galleries. Image Management Software often includes tools to convert a collection of images into an web gallery. Programs that provide this capability include iPhoto, Cumulus, Extensis Portfolio, Photoshop, iView and Galerie. Galerie and iPhoto allow you to produce a web gallery with annotations or keywords associated with images (Galerie also allows comments to be added to web galleries). Consult with the PC and Mac software pages for more information. Digital Libraries and Databases. There are a growing number of digital collections and databases. If you are affiliated with the UC, please refer to the California Digital Library's UC Image Service Collections page as a starting point for digital libraries and related tools. For additional informatioin on both public and subscribtion image databases, please refer to our digital visual resources page.

 

Luna Insight. Luna Insight is a special java-client software tool that interfaces with image databases from the UC Image Service Collections. For the highest level of functionality, it must be installed on the local computer and initiated with the appropriate password (you will need to talk to the. Through Luna Insight, images may be searched, selected, grouped and exported as Powerpoints or web galleries, including metadata.
