The Languages of Los Angeles Project

Displaying characters other than the standard West European

The phonetic and "foreign" characters on these pages are in unicode. In order to see them, you will need to set your browser's character set to Unicode (UTF-8), as follows:

  • Netscape: View - Character Set

  • Explorer: View - Encoding

In the case of some languages, setting the encoding as described above will be sufficient to show the additional characters. For other languages, you will have to choose specific fonts.

For PC users: the font used is Lucida Sans Unicode, which comes bundled with Windows 98, and includes a full IPA character set. If you do not have it, you may download it free here, from the Phonetics & Linguistics website at University College, London and install it. Then assign this font to Unicode as follows:

  • Netscape: Edit - Preferences. In the new window: Appearance - Fonts, For the Encoding: choose Unicode. For the fonts, choose Lucida Sans Unicode.

  • Explorer: Once you have the font downloaded, the browser will automatically use it when the page calls for it.

For Mac users: the Tahoma font, which comes with Word, should support Unicode, although in practice it still seems to be problematical for many characters because it does not include any beyond the first extended character sets.
