The First Annual University of California Conference on Late Antiquity

Saturday May 26, 2006

Abstracts Due Friday, 17 March, 2006

University of California Multicampus Research Group on the History and Culture of Late Antiquity and the UCLA Graduate Student Association for the Study of Late Antiquity announces its First Annual Conference for Faculty and Advanced Graduate Students on Saturday, May 26, 2006 in Bunche Hall on the University of California, Los Angeles campus. This conference serves as the successor of the UCLA Graduate Student Conference on Late Antiquity.

We are pleased to welcome to the conference special guest Bryan Ward-Perkins, author of the recent "The Fall of Rome and the End of Civilization" ( Oxford).

Abstracts from Faculty and Graduate students from any university in California are now being accepted on the topic of city, citizen, citizenship and their connection to the late Antique world. Possible topics could include (but are not limited by)

* The Transformation of Civic Life

* Laws and their Effect on Cities

* Decline of Euergetism

* Movement of Civic Elites into Imperial Administration

* Perceptions of Citizenship

* Role of the Emperor and Imperial Ideology in Unifying the later Roman Empire

* Analysis of Individuals and their Careers (i.e. Libanius)

* Difference between Urban and Rural Life

* The Role of Bishops in Maintaining their city

* Trade, Travel, and Pilgrimage and their Role in Creating a Unified Culture

This conference is intended to bring together scholars of diverse interests to present and discuss a range of issues surrounding the transformation of the Classical world into the Latin Medieval West, Byzantium and the Islamic world. The conference therefore serves as a wonderful opportunity to gain feedback from peers in a wide variety of fields. Additionally, we hope that it will provide the chance for both new and continuing graduate students to gain experience in presenting professional papers.

Abstracts of no more than 300 words for 15-20 minute papers should be e-mailed (preferred) or mailed to the coordinator of the Late Antiquity Conference, Walter Ward. In addition to the abstract, please include a brief personal statement or curriculum vitae of less than one page, with full contact information and a tentative assessment of any audiovisual needs for your presentation. The deadline for abstract submission is Friday, March 17, 2006. A graduate student committee will review submissions and respond by email on March 31. Abstracts of accepted papers will be made available on our web site and at the conference.

Through the generous funding of the University of California Multicampus Research Group on the History and Culture of Late Antiquity, we are able to provide accommodations and airfare (if necessary) for presenters from outside Los Angeles.
