  • Argos - A Limited Area Search of the Ancient and Medieval Internet.

  • Bryn Mawr Electronic Resources Review - Online information and reviews of electronic resources available for the study of antiquity and late antiquity.

  • Netserf - Searchable database of links, texts, and other online resources organized by topic for the entire Middle Ages.

  • WWW Virtual Library History Index - Centralized index of links to sites for the study of history, categorized by era, country, methods and materials, disciplines, and topics.

General Collections and Databases

  • The Internet Medieval Sourcebook - Provides primary source material on the Middle Ages in the public domain for use online, with a specific section on Byzantine Sources.

  • The Labyrinth - Resources for Medieval Studies sponsored by Georgetown University.  The Labyrinth provides free, organized access to electronic resources in medieval studies through a World Wide Web server at Georgetown University. The Labyrinth's menus and links provide connections to databases, services, texts, and images on other servers around the world.

  • Digital Scriptorium - A test database of manuscripts held at Columbia University and at the Bancroft Library, including entries from Barnard College, Teachers College, Union Theological Seminary, UC Berkeley's Music Library, and the Robbins Collection.

  • Dumbarton Oaks: Byzantine Online Resources - Provides links to sites for the study of Byzantium.

  • ORB: The Online Resource Book for Medieval Studies - An academic site, written and maintained by medieval scholars for the benefit of their fellow instructors and serious students. All articles have been judged by at least two peer reviewers. Authors are held to high standards of accuracy, currency, and relevance to the field of medieval studies.  The site includes teaching resources, links, and online texts.

  • ORB: Late Antiquity in the Mediterranean - Guide to online resources concerning the study of Late Antiquity, including essays, studies, bibliographies, online texts, images, maps, conferences, and professional societies.

  • WWW Virtual Library History Index: Ancient Rome - Provides links by topic to sites on Ancient Rome.  Some cover the imperial and later period.

  • WWW Virtual Library History Index: Medieval Europe - List of online references maintained by the Michigan State University Graduate Student Medieval and Renaissance Consortium under the sponsorship of the ORB.  Wide assortment of resource types and subjects.

Bibliographies - Links to specialized and subject bibliographies related to the study of Late Antiquity which are available online.  Some bibliographies are professionally developed and other are personal created.

Online Texts - Links to primary source texts available online in modern and ancient language versions.  These texts are those provided in the full length version, rather than excerpts as provided elsewhere (see the General Collection options above, or any of the specific subject links below, for a wider selection of sources).  The online texts can be in modern and/or ancient language versions.

Journals - List of sites that provide online access to academic journals associated with the study of late antiquity.  Journal web sites are provided which allow at least some access to contents, either by providing tables of contents, article summaries or full access to published articles.  For journals without a web presence, descriptions can be found in some of the online guides to journals. The list of journals are divided by category: Guides to Journals, Journals on Antiquity, Journals on the Middle Ages, Journals for Religious Studies and E-Journals.

Dictionaries - Links to language and topical dictionaries related to the general study of Late Antiquity, including Latin, Greek, German, French, Italian among others.

Discussion Groups - A list of e-mail/list-serve discussion groups dedicated to the study of Antiquity, Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages.

Byzantium - Sites and resources concerning the study of the Eastern Roman Empire in the Late Antique period and beyond, up to the year AD 1000.

Western Roman Empire and Beyond - Sites and resources concerning the Late Antique Western Roman Empire and the areas of Southern and Western Europe up to the year AD 800, including migratory tribal communities in place after the collapse of Roman political authority in the West.

Religion - Links to sites devoted to the religious studies of Late Antiquity, including Pagans, Christians, and Jews as well as the theological and philosophical conflicts of the period. 

Law - List of online resources concerning the study of Roman law and its transmission and use in Europe and the Mediterranean.

Papyrology - Links to sites concerned with the study of documents and the transmission of texts on papyrus.

Geography and Archaeology - Selected online resources for the study of the geography and archaeology of Europe, Eurasia, North Africa and the Mediterranean in Antiquity and Late Antiquity.  Includes links to maps available online.

Participating MRG University Programs - Web sites and course information for the participating universities, programs and faculty in the University of California's Multi-Campus Research Group on the History and Culture of Late Antiquity.
