The Program announces a Winter 2001 seminar:

INDO-EUROPEAN STUDIES 280A

(Seminar in Indo-European Linguistics):

Introduction to Central Asian Buddhist Texts and Terminology:
Buddhist Sanskrit, Tocharian A and B, Tibetan

Instructor: Prof. Vyacheslav Ivanov
Time: Monday, 3:00-6:00 p.m.
Place: Dodd Hall Room 221A

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Each central term and text will be introduced in its Sanskrit (mostly Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit) form; then, equivalent terminology and translations in Tocharian (A and B) and some other Central Asian languages (especially Tibetan, Sogdian) will be discussed, with reference to the study of central notions of Buddhism. The main goal of the course will be to allow students to develop an acquaintance with the system of Buddhist notions and ideas as translated into various Central Asian languages. In addition to philosophical terms and texts, some other elements of Buddhist teachings will be covered.

PREREQUISITE

The seminar does not require knowledge of the languages in question, although some acquaintance with (elementary) Sanskrit texts would be helpful.
