INDO-EUROPEAN STUDIES 280A

(Seminar in Indo-European Linguistics):

Intensive Introduction to Classical Sanskrit

Instructor: Dr. Christopher Wilhelm
Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:00 noon-1:15 p.m.
Place: Dodd Hall Room 221A

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course will provide a rapid and thorough introduction to Classical Sanskrit grammar and vocabulary, as well as the devanagari writing system. Students will work towards developing an ability to read unsimplified selections of texts in Classical and Epic Sanskrit.

TEXT MATERIALS

H. Craig Melchert, An Introduction to Sanskrit (1986; unpublished) will be made available in the form of a course reader; additional materials will be distributed as needed.

PREREQUISITE

The course is open to graduate students who have a sound knowledge of at least one ancient Indo-European language (such as, Greek, Latin, Old Church Slavonic, Old English, Gothic, Classical Armenian, etc.). (Depending on space, the instructor may admit auditors with the same background.)
