Office Hour: Friday 10:00-10:45 a.m. and by appointment.

The required books are:

  • Monica Partridge, Serbo-Croat Practical Grammar and Reader. Fourth edition.
  • Belgrade: Prosveta, 1991

The goal of this course is to gain proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Emphasis on grammar as a communicative tool. Students are expected to strive for a minimum of ACTFL/ILR level 1 proficiency in all areas.

Your grade will be based on the following components:

  • quizzes on structure, reading, writing, communicative situations 50%
  • proficiency exercises 20%
  • final exam on structure, reading, writing, communicative situations 15%
  • attendance, homework, participation 15%

Extra credit can be granted for individual projects.

We cover six chapters in the Partridge textbook during each quarter. At the beginning of each chapter, students are expected to:

  • 1) read the chapter thoroughly; and
  • 2) prepare vocabulary flash cards for the dialog/text vocabulary. Students are expected to use these flash cards and to have the ability to understand these words and phrases and to use them in writing by the time of the chapter quiz.
  • 3)Students are also responsible for all chapter grammar explanations and tables.

While the schedule refers primarily to topics from the Partridge textbook, much of our classroom work is proficiency-oriented and does not in all respects follow the textbook. During the first quarter students will progress gradually from an ability to name and refer to familiar objects, to descriptions of objects and people, and finally to narration of events with appropriate connective devices. The introduction of grammatical structures will parallel the students' need for these structures in their ever more sophisticated communicative activities. For these reasons, it is absolutely essential that students be in class and on time each day.
