The letter should also identify the archives or libraries where the research is to be carried out, describing the collections or materials to be consulted and indicating their importance to the success of the project. A letter of endorsement from the studentís dissertation director must accompany the application. The Department's Fellowship Committee will review applications and make the final selection. All travel arrangements must be approved by the Department's MSO. The successful candidate must submit a report of the fieldwork undertaken within one month of his/her travel and present a brown bag seminar to the Department in the quarter after the travel has been completed.

Ben and Rue Pine are among UCLA's most active and prominent supporters, with wide-ranging interests from athletics to Spanish. Both UCLA alumni, the Pines are involved with more than a dozen support groups at the university, and they are always a warm and welcome presence at the many campus events they attend. In their extensive travels over the years, the Pines have developed a special love of Spanish culture, and they have endowed a fund that will enable students and faculty to follow in their footsteps. The Ben and Rue Pine Travel Award in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese provides for research and conference travel.
