Module Title: Las Meninas

Module objectives
• Introduce students to basic elements of painting (color)
• Familiarize students with a Spanish painter and his masterpiece
• Preview information on a Spanish royal family and the period
• Practice noun-adjective agreement/"ser" and "estar"
• Practice cognate identification and equivalent Spanish-English endings

Module description

A. Activities with reading selection
1. Audio version of reading selection.
2. Reading strategies: recognizing equivalent Spanish-English endings.
3. Appplication of reading strategies.
B. Grammar activities
1. Reading selection with adjectives highlighted.
2. Activity to scan text and match adjectives with corresponding nouns.
C. Audio-visual comprehension activity
1. Video clip of Las Meninas with audio description.
2. Follow up activity matching phases from text to video viewing
D. Aural and reading comprehension
1. Supplementary reading on colors
2. Same video clip
3. Follow up activity on identifying and clasifying colors
E. listening comprehension, speaking and writing
(individual and collaborative)
1. Painting "Las Meninas" by Velázquez
2. Individual writing activity with graphics (paintings)
Partners get different directions
3. Oral activity with partner (sharing and responding to partner's writing) It can be done in class or on-line if communication package is available
F. Collaborative writing
